This Week in the Garden: Your Questions Answered, Week of March 23
Question #2:
Can I grow blueberries in my yard (in southern WI)?
Answer:
It is very challenging to grow blueberries in in-ground garden locations in southern WI because our soils are too alkaline, meaning the soil pH is too high, typically above 7.0. Blueberries require an ideal soil pH in the range of 4.5-5.0. In order to lower the pH of the soil, large amounts of sulfur are needed, repeatedly, over time.
A great alternative is to grow blueberries in containers. By growing them in containers (which could mean a raised bed), you can more easily control and maintain the proper soil conditions to grow them.
