This Week in the Garden: Your Questions Answered, Week of March 23
Spring is here and the gardening questions are starting to come in. Here are a few highlights and quick answers to help you in your own yard!
Question #1:
When planting trees, should we add some compost or soil amendments to the planting hole?
Answer:
NO! When planting woody ornamentals like trees and shrubs, do NOT add any other soil, compost or other amendments to the planting hole. Whatever soil came out is the only soil that goes back in. If you add different soil or compost, there is a very high likelihood that the tree’s roots will start to circle around themselves in the planting hole, rather than expanding into the surrounding soil. This causes girdling roots, which will eventually cause the tree to decline and die.
