Gypsy Moth
Have you seen these moths around? They may be more harmful to your trees than you think!
Each year, gypsy moth caterpillars defoliate thousands of acres of hardwood forests, yard trees and other urban trees throughout the northeastern United States, including Wisconsin. This Gypsy Moth in Wisconsin website offers tips on how to limit damage to your trees and describes available assistance programs. It also includes management options for homeowners on a month-by-month basis.
Emerald Ash Borer
Emerald Ash Borer, a serious pest of ash trees has been confirmed Walworth County and several other counties of Southeast Wisconsin. Homeowners can take steps to provide their trees with a measure of security but it must be done proactively. From determining if you have an ash tree, to advising on what to replace one with, the UW-Extension and Master Gardener Volunteers are here to help. Take a look at our Ash Tree Identification publication for help in identifying your tree. Now the question is what should homeowners do? Join us during this centennial year as we celebrate the successes and achievements of the past program year and get an official start to the new one! We’ll enjoy the 2014 slide show, recognition of outstanding county records awards winners, and the installation of our 2015 Association officers. We’ll have the opportunity to bid on a variety of fun and useful items to raise money that will help offset 4-H program costs in the coming year. We’ll also find out who the lucky winner of the annual Heart in Hand 4-H Quilters’ Guild quilt will be!
Each participating family is asked to bring a dish to pass. Meat, dessert, and beverages will be provided. When you call to R.S.V.P., please let us know what you plan to bring (ex: vegetable, fruit salad, casserole, bread, etc.).

If you are a parent of a 4-7 year-old and your child has experienced temper tantrums, difficulty making or keeping friends, impatience or interrupting, and/or not listening, then the Raising a Thinking Child workshop may be just right for you! This evidence-based workshop series will help you guide your child to solve common, everyday problems by communicating with your child. Participants will learn to give their children skills to solve their own problems and think about the consequences through fun games. They will also learn how to help kids care about and understand their own and others’ feelings
This program is facilitated by Jenny Wehmeier, Walworth County UW-Extension Family Living Educator. It is a refreshingly practical curriculum that helps you help your child learn how to think, not what to think. Through 8 weekly classes, along with interactive, fun activities for you and your child to do at home, you will learn ways to help your child think in new problem-solving ways.

What is the difference between bisque, bouillabaisse, and borscht? Whether you are a soup connoisseur or a beginner, join us for an informational workshop covering how soup is part of a healthy diet, soup-making tips, and how to create tasty soups. Samples of several recipes will be provided. Presented by your Walworth County UW-Extension Family Living Educator, Jenny Wehmeier. There is no fee; however, registration is required to ensure enough samples for all! (Space is limited to 30 participants.) Deadline for registration is October 23rd or when class is full. This event is sponsored by the Genoa City Library Friends.
Slow Cooking Your Fall Harvest

It’s time to bring your slow cooker out to enjoy the fall harvest! Join Walworth County UW-Extension Family Living Educator Jenny Wehmeier for an hour filled with tastes and smells of fall. We will sample several dishes and talk through important food and slow cooker safety do’s and don’ts. Register early – limit of 30 for this class! Pay at the door!
From Freezer to Table: Preparing Freezer Meals for Your Family
Tuesday, December 2; 6:00-8:00 p.m.

When you get home from work, do you struggle to decide what to make? Is time an issue for your family? Do you want to add more variety to your meals? The NEW From Freezer to Table workshop is an opportunity for you to prepare tasty meals that you can take home with you to freeze or eat right away. Participants bring a set of knives and the containers they wish to take their meals home in (Tupperware, Ziploc, or other freezer containers encouraged). Everything else is provided! All recipes are appropriate to freeze and many can be prepared in a slow cooker or microwave. Each participant will prepare at least three items during the evening. Recipes may include: Tasty Chili, Stuffed Green Pepper Soup, Candied Sweet Potatoes, Southwest Chicken, Apple and Pork Tenderloin, Taco Soup, Pork Sauerkraut Surprise, Beef and Mushroom Delight, Creamy Potatoes, Beef Stew, Sweet and Sour Pork, and much more!
